Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of the country, is the largest and most populous state in the southern region. Its boundaries are Santa Catarina to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Uruguay to the south and Argentina to the west. It is the fourth richest state in the country, surpassed only by São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. It is also the fifth most populous and third in terms of the HDI (Human Development Index).

Its economy is based on agriculture, livestock and industry (food, textile, leather and footwear, timber, metallurgical and chemical). In addition, Rio Grande do Sul has several tourism options. The beaches of the north coast, such as Capão da Canoa, Tramandaí and Torres are the best known in the state. The mountainous regions also attract thousands of tourists, mainly in winter and summer. The cities of Gramado and Canela are famous for the decorations they make at Christmas holidays.
