Greek painter (1541-7 / 4/1614). He becomes known for paintings showing religious scenes with elongated figures, revealing great technical mastery. Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, is born in Cândia, later Heracleia, on the Greek island of Crete. He studies in Venice, Italy, as a disciple of Titian.

Around 1576, he moved to Toledo, the Spanish religious and cultural center, whose Byzantine heritage influences him, as well as the Italian masters and Michelangelo's last works. He draws religious pieces and, at the same time, paints The estate to the cathedral of Toledo.

He also becomes a portrait painter, characterized by vibrant colors, unusual perspectives and distorted and disproportionate contour figures. Misunderstood at first, some critics attribute this to an alleged defect in the artist's view.

His most famous work is The Count of Orgaz's Burial, painted between 1586 and 1588 for the São Tomé Church in Toledo, the city where the artist dies and which houses the El Greco Museum and most of his works.
